Roll-formed roofing and cladding profiles are shaped after the aluminum has been painted. That sequence saves a separate finishing step, but it also means the coating must tolerate the forming operation without cracking, lifting or being scratched by the tooling.

A useful specification describes the material and the production conditions together. Naming a coating type or requesting a “pass” on a bend test is not enough to establish how a particular coil will perform in a specific profile.

Formability Is a Material-and-Process Result

During a bend, the outside face of the profile stretches while the inside face compresses. The substrate’s alloy, temper and thickness affect how much deformation the metal can accommodate. The coating system must remain attached and resist cracking as the substrate changes shape.

The National Coil Coating Association identifies flexibility, resistance to surface marring and fit with the production equipment as key considerations when forming prepainted metal. It also notes that scratches can result from rough dies, insufficient clearance or poor equipment alignment. These are different problems from coating cracks caused by excessive strain.

For aluminum, specify the alloy and temper rather than simply asking for “formable material.” Senruida’s pre-painted aluminum coil range lists alloys including 3003, 3004, 5052 and 5754, with dimensions and temper options to be agreed for the order. The chosen combination should match the profile geometry, structural requirements and forming equipment.

Describe the Profile, Not Just the Alloy

A supplier needs enough information to assess the actual forming demand. Include a profile drawing or sample, the minimum inside bend radius, the number and sequence of forming stages, and which face of the coil will be exposed. Identify tight returns, hems and other areas with concentrated deformation.

Also state the line details that affect fit: coil width, thickness and tolerances, coil weight, inner and outer diameters, feed direction, and any restrictions on protective film. Check that the specified coil dimensions are compatible with the uncoiler and forming line. Coating and backing layers should be considered when setting equipment clearances.

For building envelopes, the roofing and cladding application gives useful context for connecting coil selection to the finished profile. A material intended for a simple panel bend may not be suitable for a tighter standing-seam detail without a production trial.

Specify a Bend Test and Its Acceptance Criteria

A bend test can compare coating flexibility, but the method and acceptance criteria matter. EN 13523-7:2021 covers resistance to cracking on bending for coil-coated metals. The procedure bends the specimen through 135° to 180° and can also assess adhesion. ASTM D522/D522M-17(2021) addresses cracking resistance of attached organic coatings on sheet-metal or rubber-type substrates.

These methods are not interchangeable by name alone. In the RFQ or purchase specification, identify the agreed standard and edition, the test method, the substrate and temper, the coating face, and the acceptance rule. State how cracks or loss of adhesion will be evaluated and reported. Avoid a bare requirement such as “T-bend pass” unless the parties have agreed what “pass” means.

EN 1396:2023 is the European specification for coil-coated aluminum sheet and strip for general applications. It provides a product-specification framework, while the agreed test method and project requirements should define the coating-flexibility acceptance needed for the profile.

A laboratory bend result is useful evidence, not a guarantee of production performance. The result applies to the tested combination of substrate, temper, coating and test conditions. It does not reproduce every factor in a roll-forming line, including tooling condition, clearance, alignment, speed and profile geometry.

Run a Trial on the Intended Line

When the profile has tight bends or the project has a strict appearance requirement, confirm performance with a representative forming trial. Use the specified material and coating, the intended coil orientation and the actual or equivalent production tooling. Inspect the most highly strained areas after forming for cracking, flaking, loss of adhesion, scratches and marking.

If the trial shows a problem, identify its location and appearance before changing the specification. Cracking on a tight bend may point to excessive deformation or a material-and-coating combination that needs review. Repeated scratches along the profile may instead indicate die condition, clearance, alignment or handling. Changing to a thicker coating will not automatically solve either issue.

Senruida lists coated aluminum products in alloys such as 3004, including A3004 color-coated coil. The company’s stated team experience is more than 20 years, and its broader pre-painted coil range includes widths up to 2,650 mm and thicknesses up to 3.0 mm. Confirm the available dimensions and the agreed forming requirements for the specific order.

What to Include in the RFQ

  • Alloy, temper, nominal thickness and agreed tolerances.

  • Coating system, color, gloss, back coating and protective-film requirements.

  • Profile drawing, minimum inside radius, forming sequence and exposed face.

  • Coil width, weight, inner and outer diameters, feed direction and line constraints.

  • Required flexibility test, standard and edition, test conditions and acceptance criteria.

  • Trial quantity and inspection points for cracking, adhesion, scratches and surface marking.

A clear RFQ gives the supplier and fabricator a shared basis for reviewing formability before a full production run. The most reliable decision comes from matching the material specification to the profile and then confirming it on the intended equipment.
